• Lighting: The Powder Puff Cactus thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Place it in a sunny location, such as a south-facing window, where it can receive ample light without being exposed to harsh, direct rays. While it enjoys sunlight, be mindful of extreme heat during summer months and provide some shade if necessary to prevent sunburn.
• Watering: This cactus prefers minimal watering, especially during its dormant period in the winter months. Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering sessions. Overwatering should be avoided, as it can lead to root rot, which is harmful to the plant’s health. Ensure the pot has adequate drainage to prevent standing water.
• Temperature: The ideal temperature for the Powder Puff Cactus is between 60F to 85F (16C to 29C). It can tolerate brief periods of cooler temperatures, but it is best to avoid exposing it to conditions below 50F (10C). Keep the plant indoors during colder months to maintain its health and growth.
• Soil: This cactus thrives in well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. The soil should allow excess water to drain away quickly, preventing root rot. You can add sand or perlite to improve soil aeration if needed. Avoid using regular potting soil, as it tends to retain moisture, which is detrimental to the plant.
• Size: The Powder Puff Cactus is a small, globular plant, typically reaching up to 3 inches in height and spreading to about 4 inches in width. Its compact size makes it perfect for small spaces, desktops, or windowsills where it can be admired up close. The cactus slowly grows over time, maintaining its neat, round form.
• Flowers: During the spring, the Powder Puff Cactus produces stunning pink or reddish flowers that bloom in a circular arrangement around the top of the plant. These flowers are small but vibrant, creating a beautiful contrast against the white spines. The flowers typically last for several weeks, adding seasonal interest to your plant.
