Description:

Eleocharis sp. ‘Belem’ (Mini Hairgrass) Tissue Culture is a compact carpeting plant with fine, bright green, grass-like leaves that create a soft, natural lawn across the foreground of the aquarium. Compared to standard hairgrass varieties, ‘Belem’ grows shorter and denser, making it ideal for creating a neat, manicured carpet with minimal maintenance. As it matures, it spreads by runners, gradually filling in open areas to produce a lush, vibrant carpet that enhances the depth and scale of any aquascape.

Care Requirements:

Eleocharis sp. ‘Belem’ (Mini Hairgrass) is suitable for aquarists of all experience levels and is relatively easy to establish. Divide the tissue culture into small portions and plant them a few centimetres apart to encourage even spreading. Moderate to high lighting will promote healthy growth, while the addition of CO encourages faster runner production and a denser carpet. A nutrient-rich substrate and regular fertilisation will support vigorous growth and vibrant green colouration. Trim the leaves occasionally to maintain a tidy appearance and stimulate fresh growth. Stable water parameters and consistent maintenance will help this miniature hairgrass develop into a thick, healthy carpet.

Potential Issues and Tips:

  • Melting: Newly introduced tissue culture plants can sometimes experience some melting (loss of leaves) as they adapt to the new environment. Providing stable water parameters and good lighting can minimise this.
  • Algae: Imbalances in light, nutrients, or CO2 can lead to algae growth on the leaves. Maintaining proper balance and performing regular water changes can help prevent this.
  • Colour Loss: Insufficient lighting or nutrient deficiencies (especially iron) can cause the vibrant red colour to fade.
  • Trimming: Regular trimming is crucial for maintaining the desired shape and preventing the plant from overshadowing lower-growing species. Trim the tops and replant them to create a denser bush.

Tissue cultures are in a 5cm container – simply rinse gel and plant.

In ideal conditions, shelf life will be approx 4 weeks.
