Begonia ‘Black Forest’ is a brooding rhizomatous begonia cloaked in some of the darkest foliage the genus has to offer. Broad, slightly puckered leaves emerge in deep forest green and mature to near-black, overlaid with ghostly silver markings that catch the light like moonlight on dark water.

Origins

Begonia ‘Black Forest’ is a modern hybrid begonia developed for ornamental houseplant use, drawing on rhizomatous species native to the humid rainforests of the Americas and Southeast Asia, where darker-leafed begonias grow on deeply shaded, leaf-littered forest floors.

Soil and Substrate

The shallow roots and creeping rhizome of ‘Black Forest’ sit close to the surface and dislike heavy, waterlogged soils. Our Simply Houseplant Tropical Potting Mix suits it wel as it holds gentle moisture around the rhizome while draining freely enough to prevent rot and keep new leaves emerging steadily.
